Long Shadows

I have always loved Autumn. It is my absolute favorite time of year. I have always attributed my attraction to the season to the fact that I was born in early September and must have taken in all the scents and excitement of that time of year as a baby.

But yesterday as I drove North and as the sun began to show its slightly different angle on the earth I realized that it is the lengthening shadows of evening that draw my affections to this time of year. The crisp, cool, Autumn air seems to settle any misgivings the trees may have that they might not get their yearly rest, and as they resistantly surrender their leaves to blanket the naked ground for the upcoming frost, the sun allows them to stretch their reach to cover up the earth.

As the shadows seemed to cover my northern route yesterday and stretch to reach the eastern part of the interstate I realized it was these long shadows of the baring trees that make me love Autumn.

It seems almost inspirational. As the shadows lengthen their reach, so should we. We should reach out to our fellowman and "blanket" them for the upcoming weather.
